June 26, 1975: During the
Emergency period (1975–1977) in India, he was in jail from
this day until the Lok Sabha elections in 1977, when he was
elected as MP from Almora.
1991 to 1993: He was the
President of the BJP.
May 19, 1998: He took over
as the Minister of Human resource Development.
May 22, 2004: He retired as
the Minister of Human resource Development.

Manifesto Preparation Board.
2014: He vacated that

certain media reports to have been associated with Ranvir
Sena involved in Bihar Dalit Massacres.

honoured with PADMA VIBHUSHAN Award by the
Govt of India.
