- He led the Kanpur rebellion during the
Indian Rebellion of 1857.
- Being the adopted son of the exiled Maratha Peshwa
Baji Rao II, he was entitled to a
pension from the English East India Company.
- However, after the death of his father, the East India
Company refused to continue the pension.
- Because of this as well as the arrogant policies
policies of the administration, he was compelled to
revolt and seek freedom from
company rule in India.
- He forced the British garrison in Cawnpore to surrender
and gained control of Cawnpore for a few days. He later
disappeared, after his forces were defeated by a British
force that recaptured Cawnpore.
