  • November 08, 1949:   After a trial that lasted over a year, Godse was sentenced on this day to death.

  • Godse from Pune, Maharashtra, had been a member of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Hindu Mahasabha.
  • He left RSS in the early 1940s to form a militant organization, Hindu Rashtra Dal.
  • He resented about Gandhi's partiality to India's Muslims, that led to plotting the assassination with Narayan Apte and six others.
  • This was the first execution in Independent India. He along with Narayan Apte were executed on this day for assassinating Mahatma Gandhi.
