  • 1910:   He met his guru, Swami Yukteswar Giri, at the age of 17.
  • 1917:   He founded the Yogoda Satsang Society of India.
  • 1920:   He went to the United States as India's delegate to an International Congress of Religious Liberals convened in Boston.
  • 1920:   He founded the Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF) to disseminate worldwide his teachings on India's ancient practices and philosophy of Yoga and its tradition of meditation.  
  • 1935:   He returned to India to visit Yukteswar and to help establish his Yogoda Satsanga work in India.
  • 1936:   While Yogananda was visiting Calcutta, his Guru Yukteswar died in the town of Puri.  
  • 1999:   His life story, Autobiography of a Yogi, has since been translated into twenty-eight languages. In 1999, it was designated one of the 100 Most Important Spiritual Books of the 20th Century. More than 4 million copies of this book have been sold.
  • March 07, 2017:   Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi released a Special Commemorative Postage Stamp to commemorate 100 years of Yogoda Satsanga Society of India at a function in New Delhi; Remembering last words of Paramahansa Yogananda, the Prime Minister said:
    •  his teachings are full of compassion towards all.
    • Kriya Yoga practised by Yogananda revitalises subtle currents of life energy in the body.
    • the path shown by Yogi ji was not about ‘Mukti’ but ‘Antaryatra’.

  •  He introduced many westerners to the teachings of meditation and Kriya Yoga through his book, Autobiography of a Yogi.  
  • He describes his first meeting with Giri as a rekindling of a relationship that had lasted for many lifetimes.  
  • He was the first Hindu teacher of yoga to spend a major portion of his life in America.  
  • During this visit, Guru Yukteswar gave Yogananda the monastic title of Paramahansa, that means "supreme swan" and is a title indicating the highest spiritual attainment.  
  • His discourses in his lectures across US, taught of the "unity of the original teachings of Jesus Christ and the original Yoga taught by Bhagavan Krishna.
