- 1972: His real badminton career started from winning the
Indian national junior title in this year. He also won the senior
title the same year.
- 1972: He received the Arjuna Award.
- 1978: He won his first major international
title, the men's singles gold medal at the 1978
Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, Canada.
- 1979: He won the Indian national title consecutively
for the next seven years, until this year. In the same
year, he won the Evening of Champions
at the Royal Albert Hall, London.
- March 23, 1980: On this
day, he became the first Indian to win All England Badminton
Championship when he beat Indonesia's Liem Swie King in the
final.
- 1982: He received the
PADMA SHRI Award from the Govt f India.
