- 1931: After featuring in nine silent films,
he did a supporting role in India's first film
talkie, Alam Ara.
- 1942: He also founded the Prithvi Theatres, a
travelling theatre company based in Mumbai.
- 1960: In the film ‘Mughal E Azam’
he gave his most memorable performance
as the Mughal emperor Akbar.
- 1963: His
performances in Harishchandra
Taramati, is also remembered by many.
- 1965: His role as Porus in
Sikandar-e-Azam was also appreciated by all.
- 1969: He was decorated with
PADMA BHUSHAN Award.
- 1971: He als did
exceptionally well the role of the grandfather in
Kal Aaj Aur Kal where he appeared
with his son Raj Kapoor and grandson Randhir Kapoor.
- 1971: He was honoured with
Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his contributions
towards Indian cinema.

(Indian People’s Theatre Association), which was originally
