- 1899: He was a member of Indian
National Congress since his student days in 1899.
- July 31, 1937 - He became the Speaker
of the Legislative Assembly of the present-day Uttar
Pradesh.
- 1946: He was elected to the Constituent
Assembly of India.
- June 12, 1947 - The Congress Working
Committee met and passed a resolution accepting the
Partition of India.
- June 14, 1947 - When the Resolution for
acceptance of Partition of India came up for ratification,
he strongly dissented.
- August 10, 1950 - He ceased to be the
Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of the present-day Uttar
Pradesh.
- 1952: Elected to the Lok Sabha of the
Indian Parliament.
- 1956: Elected to the Rajya Sabha of the
Indian Parliament.
- 1961 - Decorated with BHARAT
RATNA Award.
