The film was based on the legend of King
Harishchandra, who has been also mentioned in the
great Indian epics of Ramayana and
the Mahabharata.

The film was first shown in public on 3 May 1913 in Mumbai;
Owing to the huge success of the film show, Dada Saheb had
to make more prints to show the film in rural areas as well.

Harishchandra was the 36th
king of the Solar Dynasty, Surya
Maharishi Gothram.

His legend is very popular and often narrated as a benchmark
for an ideal life.

He was renowned for his piety
and justice.

He is said to have two unique qualities: Firstly he never
went back on what he uttered as a promise. Secondly, he never
uttered a lie in
his life.

He was separated from his family and had to embrace extreme
poverty, but he never let his honesty
and truthfulness be
compromised.

But he stood to his principles in the face of all ordeals
and persevered to become a symbol
of courage
