  • 1944:   All India Radio, Lahore, hired Narayan as an accompanist for vocalists.
  • 1947:   He moved to Delhi following the partition of India.
  • 1949:   He shifted to Mumbai to wark in India cinema.
  • 1956:   He became a concert solo artist.
  • 1960s:   He recorded solo albums and began to tour America and Europe.
  • 2005:   He was awarded India's second highest civilian honour, the Padma Vibhushan.

  • He popularised the bowed instrument sarangi as a solo concert instrument in Hindustani classical music and became the first internationally successful sarangi player.
  •  He taught Indian and foreign students and performed, frequently outside of India.
