- 1948: Soon after partition,
his inflammatory writings (communist views and ideology)
resulted in the issuing of a warrant for his arrest by the
Government of Pakistan.
- 1949: He fled from Lahore
to Delhi and soon thereafter to Bombay, where he finally
settled down.
- 1958: Nominated – Filmfare
Award for Best Lyricist: Aurat Ne Janam Diya (Sadhna).
- 1964: Filmfare Best
Lyricist Award: Jo Wada Kiya ( Taj Mahal).
- 1971: He received
Padma Shri form Govt. of India.
- 1977: Filmfare Best
Lyricist Award: Kabhi Kabhie Mere Dil Mein (Kabhi Kabhie).
- October 25, 1980: He
suffered a massive heart attack and died in the arms of his
friend Dr R.P. Kapoor.
- March 08, 2013: A
Commemorative Postage Stamp released on his birth
anniversary on this day at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
