August 15, 1947: Became the
first Deputy Prime Minister of India and also the minister
of Home Affairs.
October 31, Every Year: It
was declared on October 31, 2014 by the Govt. of India
as the RASHTRIYA EKTA DIVAS (National Unity
Day) to be observed every year on the birth anniversary of
Sardar Patel.
August 07, 1942: He gave an
electrifying speech before a gathering of over 100,000
people at Gowalia Tank in Mumbai.
August 09, 1942: On this
day he was arrested and was imprisoned with the entire
Congress Working Committee from 1942 to 1945 at the fort in
Ahmednagar.
June 15, 1945: He was
released from jail on this day and came to realise that the
British were preparing proposals to transfer power to Indian
hands.
May 06, 1947: On this day,
he began lobbying and persuading the princes of 565 states
of the impossibility of independence from the Indian
republic. All but three of the states, after being convinced
by Patel, willingly merged into the Indian union; only Jammu
and Kashmir, Junagadh, and Hyderabad did not agree to merge
by that time.
November 12, 1947: On this
day, while at Junagadh, he took a pledge to reconstruct the
demolished Somnath temple.
Jan 03, 1948: During his speech
at Kolkata, he mentioned that about 4 crore muslims who
chose to stay back in India rather than move to the newly
created Pakistan, almost all of them had voted in favour of
creation of Pakistan. So expressed his surprise as to how
suddenly they changed their mind to stay back in India,
after having divided India on religious grounds.
March 30, 1949: On this
day, he inaugurated the Union of Greater Rajasthan at
Jaipur, India.

He played a major role in the country's struggle for
independence and guided its integration into a united,
independent nation.
His title ‘Sardar’ means Chief in Hindi, Urdu, and
Persian.
He was initially a successful practitioner of law,
before he jumped into the foray of politics and social work
drawing inspiration from the work and philosophy of Mahatma
Gandhi.
He soon got an opportunity for organizing the farmers of
a vast area of Gujarat for the non-violent civil
disobedience against the oppressive policies of the British
Raj.
Soon thereafter, he emerged as one of the most
influential leaders in Gujarat.
He also acquired the leadership of the Indian National
Congress, organized the party elections at two occasions and
also promoted the Quit India Movement.
He became the first Home Minister and Deputy Prime
Minister of India.
He organized reliefs for the refugees who fled Pakistan
and came to Punjab and Delhi regions.
He also was the in-charge of the task to forge a united
India from the colonial provinces and 562 self-governing
princely States, which he did achieve very aptly and
successfully.
He also established modern All India Services for the
civil servants.
He was officially awarded the Bharat Ratna,
India's highest civilian honour posthumously in 1991.
His birthday, 31 October, is celebrated in India as
Sardar Jayanti.
The Sardar Patel National Memorial was established in
1980 at the Moti Shahi Mahal in Ahmedabad.
It comprises a museum, a gallery of portraits and
historical pictures and a library, which stores important
documents and books associated with Patel and his life.
He appeared on the cover page of TIME Magazine in its
Jan. 1947 publication.
A major initiative to build dams, canals and
hydroelectric power plants on the Narmada river valley to
provide a tri-state area with drinking water, electricity
and increase agricultural production was named the Sardar
Sarovar.
Recently, the Gujarat government has announced its plans
to build a 182 m tall statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel
named as the
Statue of Unity near the main dam, which will
be the world's tallest statue.
