- His original Birth name: Pandurang Mahadev Bapat.
- He went to England for study in engineering on a
government scholarship.Once in England, he came into contact
with several Indian freedom fighters and in their company,
Bapat learned the bomb-making skills, which he took to
India.
- A Forceful Freedom Fighter of India.
- He was an active participant in the Indian
Independence Movement.
- He led the the world's first anti-dam movement to
protect the interest of affected peasants.
- His leadership of the Mulshi Satyagraha earned him the
title “Senapati”. Mulshi Satyagraha was the world’s first
anti-dam movement which was led by him. Despite this, the
dam was ultimately constructed without any compensation to
the affected peasants.· He succeeded in identifying himself
completely with the peasants who fought to save their
ancestral lands from being submerged.
- After the Alipore Bomb Conspiracy of 1908, he went into
hiding and took to travelling across India. During this
travel he was surprised to learn that a majority of Indian
rural population did not even know that their country was
ruled by foreignors. So Senapati Bapat took up the mission
of educating the masses before taking action for
overthrowing the British rulers.
- He was arrested and jailed in 1912 where he remained
till 1915.
- After return from jail, there was some softening of his
militant outlook and accordingly he aligned himself with
Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of Swaraj.
- He was given the privilege of raising the Indian
National Flag in Pune on Agust 15, 1947.
- Some of he roads in Pune and Mumbai are named after him.
- He also featured in Amar Chitra Katha comic book series
in 1984.
