- October 16, 1932: Kashmir's
first political party the Kashmir Muslim Conference
with Sheikh Abdullah as President, was formed on this day.
- June 24, 1938: He
introduced a resolution in the working committee of the
Muslim Conference for changing its name to National
Conference to allow people from all communities to
join the struggle against the autocratic rule of the
Maharaja.
- August 28, 1938: He submitted to
Maharaja of Kashmir a charter of demands for granting a
democratic constitution committed to the welfare of the
common people of Kashmir; the Maharaja did not endorse these
demands. This led to the arrest and imprisonment of Sheikh
Abdulla and many of his companions.
- February 24, 1939: He was
released from jail on this day after the indulgence by
Mahatma Gandhi.
- September 29, 1947: In May 1946
he launched the Quit Kashmir agitation against the Maharajah
Hari Singh and was arrested and sentenced to three years
imprisonment but was released only sixteen months later on
this day.
- October 22, 1947: Rebellious citizens from the western districts
of the State and Pushtoon tribesmen from the Northwest Frontier
Province of Pakistan invaded the State, backed by Pakistan. The
Maharaja initially fought back but appealed for assistance to
India, who agreed on the condition that the ruler accede to
India.
October 26, 1947: Maharaja Hari
Singh signed the Instrument of Accession on 26 October 1947
in return for military aid and assistance, which was accepted by the Governor General the
next day.
- October 30, 1947: Sheikh
Abdullah was appointed head of an emergency administration
by an order issued by the Maharaja and the former took
charge as Head of the Emergency Administration on this day.
- March 05, 1948: He was appointed
as the second Prime Minister of the State of Jammu and
Kashmir, preceded by Mehr Chand Mahajan.
- March 17, 1948: He took
oath as Prime Minister of Kashmir on this day.
- August 08, 1953: He was
dismissed as Prime Minister by the then
Sadr-i-Riyasat (Constitutional Head of State) Dr. Karan
Singh, son of the erstwhile Maharajah Hari Singh, on the
charge that he had lost the confidence of his cabinet. He
was immediately arrested and later jailed for eleven years,
accused of conspiracy against the State in the infamous
"Kashmir Conspiracy Case".
- August 09, 1953: He was
succeeded by Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad as the Prime Minister of
the State.
- April 08, 1964: The State
Government dropped all charges in the so-called "Kashmir
Conspiracy Case". Sheikh Abdullah was released and returned
to Srinagar.
- February 25, 1975: After
the 1974 Indira-Sheikh accord, he
became the 4th Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.
- March 26, 1977: He relinquished
his office as the 4th Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir,
succeeded by Governor's rule.
- July 09, 1977: He continued
as the 4th Chief Minister of jammu and Kashmir after the
Governor's rule.
- September 08, 1982: He died
on this day and so ceased to be the 4th Chief Minister of
the Jammu and Kashmir.
