- 1959: He started his
career, working as a copywriter, at a Bombay-based
advertising agency.
- 1966 to 1973: He taught at
the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune.
- 1970: He was awarded the
Homi Bhabha Fellowship (1970–72), which allowed him to work
at the Children's Television Workshop, New York, and later
at Boston's WGBH-TV.
- 1976: He was awarded
PADMA SHRI by he Govt of India.
- 1991: He was awarded
PADMA BHUSHAN by he Govt of India.
- August 08, 2007: He was
awarded the highest award in Indian cinema for lifetime
achievement, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the year 2005.
