- August 23, 1924 - EARTH and MARS - On
this day, the distance between Earth and Mars was the
smallest ever since the 10th century.
- Feb 19, 2008: The images from the Mars
Reconnaissance Orbiter showed evidence of an avalanche from
a 700-metre-high (2,300 ft) cliff.
- Jul 31, 2008: The Phoenix lander
directly sampled water ice in shallow Martian soil on this
day.
- Feb 10, 2013: The Curiosity rover
obtained the first deep rock samples ever taken from another
planetary body, using its on-board drill.
- Mar 18, 2013: NASA reported evidence
from instruments on the Curiosity rover of mineral
hydration, likely hydrated calcium sulphate, in several rock
samples taken from Mars.
- Nov 05, 2013: ISRO of India launched
Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) on this day, with the aim of
analyzing the Martian atmosphere and topography. MOM reached
Mars orbit on Sep 14, 2014.
- Sep 24, 2014: Mars Orbiter Mission
(MOM), launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation,
reached Mars orbit. ISRO launched MOM on November 5, 2013,
with the aim of analyzing the Martian atmosphere and
topography.
- Mar 18, 2015: NASA reported the
detection of an aurora that is not fully understood and an
unexplained dust cloud in the atmosphere of Mars.
- Sep 28, 2015: NASA announced the
presence of briny flowing salt water on the Martian surface.
- Oct 19, 2016: The European Space
Agency, in collaboration with Roscosmos, launched the
ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter and Schiaparelli lander on Mar 14,
2016. While the Trace Gas Orbiter successfully entered Mars
orbit on this day, Schiaparelli crashed during its landing
attempt.
