- 1953: He with few of his
friends started a Bengali poetry magazine Krittiba. Later,
he started writing for various publications of the Ananda
Bazar group, a major publishing house in Kolkata.
- February 20, 2008: After
serving five years as the Vice President, he was elected the
President of the Sahitya Akademi on this day.
- Pen names used by him included Nil Lohit, Sanatan
Pathak, and Nil Upadhyay.
- The fictional character ‘Kakababu’ created by him became
significant in Indian children's literature.
- He is the author of well over 200 books.
- Many of his works had been used in movies by eminent
producers / directors.
