- December 24, 1999: Hijacking of Indian
Airlines FLIGHT 814:
- The plane was hijacked en route from Kathmandu to
Delhi.
- Harkat-ul-Mujahideen, a Pakistan-based Islamic
extremist group, was accused of the hijacking.
- December 31, 1999: The
hostage crisis lasted for 7 days and ended on Dec 31,
1999 after India agreed to release three militants –
Mushtaq Ahmed Zargar, Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh and
Maulana Masood Azhar. These very militants have since
been implicated in 9/11, the kidnap and murder of Daniel
Pearl and Mumbai terror attacks.
