  • March 24, 1992:   The treaty was signed on this day.
  • January 01, 2002:   The Open Skies mutual surveillance treaty, initially signed on this day, officially came into force on this day.
Description
  •  Currently it has 34 States as parties.
  • India is not yet a party to it.
  • It establishes a program of unarmed aerial surveillance flights over the entire territory of its participants.
  • It is one of the most wide-ranging international efforts to date promoting openness and transparency of military forces and activities.
  • Negotiated by the then-members of NATO and the Warsaw Pact, the agreement was signed in Helsinki, Finland, on this day.
  • The United States ratified it in 1993.
