- October 24, 1945: The UN
Charter came into force on this day, after being ratified by
the original five permanent members of the Security Council
- China, France, Russia, UK and USA.
- October 30, 1945: India
joined it as one of its original members on this day.
- January 17, 1946: The UN
Security Council held its first session on this day.
- September 14, 1948:
Groundbreaking was done on this day for the UN headquarters
in New York City.
- January 09, 1951: The U.N.
headquarters officially opened on this day in New York City.
- November 20, 1959: The
United Nations adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the
Child.

day, the Peruvian Javier Pérez de Cuéllar became the first
Latin American to become Secretary General of the United
Nations.

The United Nations is an
intergovernmental organization whose stated aims include promoting
and facilitating cooperation in international law, international
security, economic development, social progress, human rights, civil
rights, civil liberties, political freedoms, democracy, and the
achievement of lasting world peace.

The UN was founded in 1945
after World War II to replace the League of Nations, to stop wars
between countries, and to provide a platform for dialogue.

It contains multiple
subsidiary organizations to carry out its missions.

The United nations Concept
comprises the following six major organs:

The various programmes and
specialized agencies and institutions of the United Nations take

The Preamble to
the treaty reads as follows:
We the peoples of
the United Nations determined

to save
succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which twice
in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind, and

to reaffirm
faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth
of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women
and of nations large and small, and
-
to establish
conditions under which justice and respect for the
obligations arising from treaties and other sources of
international law can be maintained, and
-
to promote
social progress and better standards of life in larger
freedom,
And for these ends
-
to practice
tolerance and live together in peace with one another as
good neighbours, and
-
to unite our
strength to maintain international peace and security, and
-
to ensure, by
the acceptance of principles and the institution of methods,
that armed force shall not be used, save in the common
interest, and
-
to employ
international machinery for the promotion of the economic
and social advancement of all peoples,

General Assembly (UNGA/GA)
is one of the six principal organs
of the United Nations and the only
one in which all member nations have
equal representation.
- The United Nations
Security Council (UNSC) is
one of the principal organs of the
United Nations and is charged with
the maintenance of international

Economic and Social Council
(ECOSOC) constitutes one of the

Aviation Organization
(ICAO), is a specialized agency of
the United Nations, that codifies
the principles and techniques of
international air navigation and
fosters the planning and development
of international air transport to
ensure safe and orderly growth.
- The International Labour
Organization (ILO) is a
United Nations agency dealing with
labour issues, particularly
international labour standards and
decent work for all.
- The International
Maritime Organization
(IMO), known as the
Inter-Governmental Maritime
Consultative Organization (IMCO)
until 1982.
- The United Nations
Industrial Development Organization
(UNIDO); its objective is the
promotion and acceleration of
industrial development in developing
countries and countries with
economies in transition and the
promotion of international
industrial cooperation.
- The United Nations
Conference on Trade and Development
(UNCTAD) was established in 1964 as
a permanent intergovernmental body.
It is the principal organ of the
United Nations General Assembly
dealing with trade, investment, and
development issues.

Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization is a
specialized agency of the United
Nations (UN) with a purpose to
contribute peace and security by
promoting international
collaboration through education,
science, and culture in order to
further universal respect for
justice, the rule of law, and human
rights along with fundamental
freedom proclaimed in the UN
Charter.
- The World Health
Organization (WHO) is a
specialized agency of the United
Nations (UN) that is concerned with
international public health.
- The International Atomic
Energy Agency (IAEA) is an
international organization that
seeks to promote the peaceful use of
nuclear energy, and to inhibit its
use for any military purpose,
including nuclear weapons.
