- He is remembered for his
valour and actions during
the 1999 Kargil War
in Kashmir between India and
Pakistan.
- After his schooling, he joined
the Indian Military Academy in
Dehradun in 1996 and was
commissioned in the Indian army as a
Lieutinent in Jammu and Kashmir.
- Gradually he rose to the rank of
Captain.
- He as Captain and his Delta
Company was given the task of
recapturing Point 5140 deceptively
occupied by Paki soldiers in Kargil
region.
- He was given a nickname ‘Sher
Shah’ which means
‘Lion-King’, because of his
recognized courage.
- To reach the enemy post, he and
his men had to climb a sheer
rock-cliff; but as soon as he was
just to reach the top of the cliff,
he and his team were noticed by the
enemy who opened machine gun fire on
their face. Despite such attack, he
and his 5 men made it to the top of
the cliff whereafter a counter
attack was made by grenades and gun
fire.
- Despite the fact that he was
seriously injured, he
single-handedly killed three
soldiers of the enemy camp in close
combat.
- But in the early morning
of July 7, 1999,
Captain Vikram Batra attained the
martyrdom, when he
was attacked by the enemy while
rescuing one of his injured
soldiers.

Awards & Accolades |
August 15, 1999 -
posthumously awarded the Param
Vir Chakra, India's highest
award for valour, for his actions during
the 1999 Kargil War in Kashmir between
India and Pakistan. His father Mr. G.L.
Batra received the honour for his martyr
son from the President of India, late
Shri K.R. Narayanan. |

Commemoration |
- In 2003 a Hindi film
‘LOC Kargil’ was released
which was based on the entire Kargil
conflict; in this film Abhishek
Bachchan played the role of Captain
Batra.
- A hall is made in the name of
Capt. Vikram at Service Selection
Centre, Allahabad (14 SSB) named as
Vikram Batra Block.
