- 1985: He received the
Arjuna Award for Outstanding Indian Sportsman in Chess.
- December 28, 1987: He became India's
first grandmaster.
- 1987: He received the
PADMA SHRI Award from the Govt of India.
- 1991: He received the
inaugural Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, India's highest
sporting honour.
- 1996: He married Aruna
Anand.
- December 24, 2000: He
became the 15th FIDE World Chess Champion at Teheran, when
he defeated Alexei Shirov of Spain.
- 2000: He was honoured with
PADMA BHUSHAN Award by the Govt of India.
- 2003: He was the FIDE World
Rapid Chess Champion in 2003, and is widely considered the
strongest rapid player of his generation.
- 2007: He was honoured with
PADMA VIBHUSHAN Award by the Govt of India.
- April 2007: He is one of
six players in history to break the 2800 mark on the FIDE
rating list, and during this month at the age of 37, he
became the world number one for the first time.
- October 2008: He dropped to
No. 5, the first time he had been outside the top 3 since
July 1996.
- November 01, 2010: He
regained the number 1 ranking, but was once again overtaken
by in July 2011.
- October 29, 2008: He
convincingly defended the title against Kramnik in the World
Chess Championship 2008 held 14–29 October in Bonn, Germany.
- May 11, 2010: In 2010 Sofia
World Chess Championship, he participated in a World
Championship match against Veselin Topalov. Finally, he was
able to defeat Topalov and hold on to his title.
- August 2010: He joined the
board of directors of Olympic Gold Quest, a foundation for
promoting and supporting India's elite sportspersons and
potential young talent.
- November 07, 2010: He was
the only sportsperson to have been invited for the dinner
hosted by the Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for the
US President Barack Obama on this day.
- December 24, 2010: He was
guest of honour on the grounds of Gujarat University, where
20,486 players created a new world record of simultaneous
chess play at a single venue.
- April 09, 2011: He was
blessed wih a son, Akhil.
- 2012: Tamil Nadu chief
minister J. Jayalalithaa honoured him with a cheque of Rs 2
crores, for winning the World Chess Championship for the
fifth time.
- 2012: He received the
"Indian sportsperson of the year" and "Indian of the year"
awards.
- 2014: He was awarded the
Russian Order of Friendship for the development of economic,
scientific and cultural ties with Russia.
- January 08, 2015: He was
honoured with the top country award at the Spanish embassy,
Delhi. It is given to the eminent people of Indian origin
who helped to bring glory to both India and Spain.

- He has won the World Chess Championship five times and
has been the undisputed World Champion since 2007.
- Anand has won the Chess Oscar six times (1997, 1998,
2003, 2004, 2007, 2008).
- He became the undisputed World Champion in 2007 and
defended his title against Vladimir Kramnik in 2008.
- He was at the top of the world rankings five out
of six times, from April 2007 to July 2008, holding the
number-one ranking for a total of 15 months.
- He regained the world number one ranking in 1 November
2010, having defeated the reigning world No. 1 Magnus
Carlsen in the Bilbao Masters, but had to concede the top
spot back to Carlsen in July 2011.
