Description |
- World Anaesthesia Day commemorates the first successful
demonstration of ether anaesthesia on October 16, 1846.
- This ranks as one of the most significant events in the
history of Medicine and took place at the Massachusetts
General Hospital, home of the Harvard School of Medicine.
- The discovery made it possible for patients to obtain
the benefits of surgical treatment without the pain
associated with an operation.
- For most of us, the fear of being under anaesthesia is
more frightening than the surgery itself. The fear of the
common man is quite understandable and can be eliminated by
knowledge about the different forms of anaesthesia.
- The newer and safer versions of the drugs with
sophisticated monitoring equipments make anaesthesia
delivery safer than before.
- General anaesthesia is nothing more than putting a
patient to sleep until the surgery is over.
- Around 1800, a scientist by name Humphry Davy
found out that the inhalation of nitrous oxide (laughing
gas) resulted in pain reduction in addition the attainment
of an elated state. From this point, the growth of this
specialized branch of medicine has been a slow yet steady
one.
- Local anaesthesia is a method of providing pain relief
over a small area of the body. This type of anaesthesia is
usually used for minor procedures or even minor surgery. Any
procedure that is painful like pulling tooth can be done
using local anaesthesia. It is otherwise called as numbing
medication. The medication is injected into the skin at the
site of the procedure. It takes a few minutes for the
medication to have its full effect.
- Local anaesthesia is unlikely to cause any
complications. However, in rare cases, allergic reactions
are possible and may cause temporary breathing problems.
