Description |
- It is celebrated in honour of the date of the founding
of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United
Nations in 1945.
- Theme for 2013: Sustainable Food Systems for Food
Security and Nutrition.
- The World Food Programme (WFP), is the food assistance
branch of the United Nations, and it is the world's largest
humanitarian organization addressing hunger.
- WFP provides food, on average, to 90 million people per
year, 58 million of whom are children.
- From its headquarters in Rome and more than 80 country
offices around the world, WFP works to help people who are
unable to produce or obtain enough food for themselves and
their families.
- INDIA:
- 22% of the Indian population is undernourished
- 40% of children below the age of 3yrs are
underweightmajority of children aged between 6 to 35
months are anaemic
- 33% of the women aged between 15-49 yrs have a BMI
below normal.
- Now, with the passage of the Food Security Bill
2013, if properly implemented, Indians can have a gleam
of hope that their fight for "right to food" will
possibly come to an end soon.
- So, the Indian Food Guarantee programme is 10 times
bigger than the World Food Programme.
