  • February 17, 1863:   The ICRC, viz. International Committee of the Red Cross was founded on this day in Geneva, Switzerland.  
  • October 29, 1863:   16 countries met in Geneva and agreed to form the International Red Cross.
Objective Celebrated for commemorating the role played by Red Cross in saving the lives and in providing significant relief to human distress and mysery across the world. May 08 also happens to be the birthday of the founder of Red Cross, viz. Henri Dunant.
Description
  • Red Cross volunteers always remained at the forefront in times of wars, battles, famines, epidemics and other natural calamities and disasters.  
  • Red Cross and red Crescent Societies have the world's largest humanitarian network for providing relief, with their presence in about 200 countries.
  • The Red Cross and the red Crescent movement was started with a view to providing the first aid as well as all other aid and assitance to the victims on the battlefields.  
  • The Indian Red Cross Society has its headquarters at New Delhi with branches in almost all the States and Union territoties.  
  • The Indian Red Cross's programmes are grouped into four main core areas:
    • Promoting humanitarian principles and values;
    • Disaster response;
    • Disaster preparedness; and
    • Health and Care in the Community.  
  • The values that the Movement has formally stated to be of importance for promotion are:  
    • the protection of life, health and human dignity
    • respect for the human beings
    • non-discrimination on the basis of nationality, race, gender, religious beliefs, disability, class or political opinions
    • mutual understanding, friendship, cooperation and lasting peace among people
    • service by volunteers
