Description
  • It is observed to appreciate the need for toilet for everyone.
  • About half of Indian population survives without proper toilets.
  • The main objective is to break the taboo around toilets and draw attention to the global sanitation challenge.
  •  Although unthinkable for those living in wealthy parts of the world, this is a harsh reality for one in three people on this globe.
  • Since its inception in 2001, World Toilet Day has become an important platform to demand action from governments.
  • So long as we continue to eat food, we shall continue to shit.

    • Marwane of Germany said that Humans have a right to Hygeine and to be protected from sickness.
    • Märta Lauritzen of Sweden strongly feels that lack of proper sanitation is a threat for education, especially for girls.
    • Ebony of Australia says that every day more than 4,000 young children die from sanitation-related illness.
    • Alka Pande of India says that more than half of 1.2 billion people in India live without toilets.
    • Radha Reddy of India says that everyone has a right to privacy and dignity.
    • World Toilet Day seeks to bring to the forefront the health and emotional consequences, as well as the economic impact of inadequate sanitation.
    • Access to proper sanitation, declared a human right, has yet to become a reality for all.
  • Building toilets in rural India was one of the major promises Prime Minister Narendra Modi made during his speech from the Red Fort ramparts in his first Independence Day address on August 15, 2014.  The government has since claimed as of November, 2016 to have constructed around 80 lakh countryside toilets across India under Modi’s ambitious Swachh Bharat mission. 
  • The construction of toilets is a major focal area for the Swachh Bharat programme, which aims to make India “open defecation-free” by 2019.  It aims at constructing 12 crore toilets in rural India by October 2019 at a projected cost of Rs 1.96 lakh crore.
