WORLD WATER DAY
(WORLD DAY FOR WATER) |
|
Date-wise Events |
March 22 every year |
|
Description |
- This day has been celebrated since 1993 when the United
Nations General Assembly declared 22 March as World Day for
Water.
- On this day, the general public is encouraged not to use
their taps throughout the whole day.
- This occasion is used as a time to focus public
attention on the critical water issues of our era.
- There is an urgent need for action to draw attention to
the plight of the more than 1 billion people world wide that
lack access to clean and safe drinking water.
- This Day aims to increase people's awareness of the
water's importance in all aspects of life.
- This day's main symbol is the shape of a water drop in
the UN's colour blue.
- Kevin Watkins, Director, Human Development Report
Office, said:
- “In today’s world water is something more than a
source of life. Deprivation linked to water is a source
of poverty, of inequality, of social injustice, and of
great disparities in life chances. That deprivation
matters because water is a human right – and none of us
should turn a blind eye to the violation of human
rights. Nor should we tolerate a world in which over 1
million children are, in a perversely literal sense,
dying for a glass of water and a toilet.”
- Governments must ensure that every person has access to
atleast 20 litres of clean water each day.
