Vijaydashmi is also popularly known as Dussehra in India. It is
one of the most important festivals celebrated in various forms,
across India, Nepal and Bangladesh. It is celebrated on the
tenth day of the Hindu autumn lunar month of Ashvin. The first
nine days are celebrated as Sharada Navratri. The day marks the
victory of Goddess Shakti over demons. This day also celebrates
the victory of Lord Rama over the demon king Ravana. As per the
prevailing perception in India, Rama, Sita, and of Lakshmana
returned to Ayodhya on the 30th day of Ashvin (i.e. 19–20 days
after Vijaydashmi). The performing of various rituals is
intended to free the households of the following ten bad
qualities, which are represented by 10 heads of Ravana.
