Sarat Chandra , a.k.a. Sarat Chandra Chatterji (15 September 1876 - 16 January 1938) was born in a poor family in Debanandapur, , West Bengal, India.

He is one of the most popular Bengali and of early 20th century.

He left his studies due to his persistent state of . He spent 20 years of his life in at his maternal uncle's house and a major portion of his novels were either written in Bhagalpur or based on his in Bhagalpur. His work represented society and he often wrote against and oppression.

His works have been made into some fifty in many Indian , particularly his novel was made into versions.
