Soon after witnessing thousands of soldiers dead and as many wounded in the battlefield and lying , Henry Dunant took the initiative for organising from October 26 to 29, 1863, the in Geneva to develop possible measures to improve on the battle field.

Today, ICRC is part of the International Red Cross and Movement along with the International of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and 189 Societies.

ICRC is the oldest and organization within the Movement and one of the most widely recognized organizations in the world, having won three in 1917, 1944, and 1963.
