ASHOK KUMAR was an Indian film actor. His birth name is Kumudlal Kunjilal .

He attained status in Indian cinema.

Given his versatility and proven brilliance over decades, he is considered by many to be one of the Indian actors.

The Government of India honoured him with the Dadasaheb Award in 1988 and the Padma in 1998 for his contributions towards Indian cinema.

However, it was his subsequent venture with Devika Rani in Kanya in the same year that set him up for the six decade long film career.

He produced several films for Bombay Talkies during the final years of the company including the famous Mahal in 1949 in which he co-starred with .

He anchored in the most famous and first Indian soap opera which was an unprecedented success.

Ashok Kumar died at the age of 90 in Mumbai on 10 December 2001 of failure at his residence in Chembur. The then Prime Minister described him as "an inspiration... for many of aspiring actors."
