His father was a famous singer, Ali Baksh Khan, in a West
Punjabi family of musical heritage.

He is considered to have been an important
representative of the Hindustani music tradition in the
early and mid 20th century.

With an extraordinary blend of technique and appeal, he
could render fluent khayals, thumris, ghazals and bhajans with a
unique style of his own.

He used his pen name 'Sabrang' for his various
compositions.

After the partition of India in 1947, he went to his home in
Pakistan, but he was not quite satisfied with the post partition
environment there. Moreover, owing to the growing popularity and
the mass adulation he enjoyed in India, he ultimately
chose to become an Indian citizen in 1958 and settled
in Mumbai.

Despite his ill health, he managed to continue with his
performances for about a decade, till his death in 1968.
