- November 17, 1950: He was
born in Taktser, Qinghai (known to Tibetans as Amdo), and
was selected as the rebirth of the 13th Dalai Lama two years
later, although he was only formally recognized as the 14th
Dalai Lama on this day, at the age of 15.
- March 17, 1959 - During the 1959
Tibetan uprising, the Dalai Lama, who regards the uprising
as an expression of widespread discontent, fled to India
(reached India on this day), where he denounced the People's
Republic of China and established a Tibetan
Government in exile.
- March 31, 1959 - Officially, he was
given asylum in India on this day.
- May 28, 2005: He received
the Christmas Humphreys Award from the Buddhist Society in
the United Kingdom.
- June 22, 2006 - He became one of only
five people ever to be recognised with Honorary Citizenship
by the Governor General of Canada.
- November 26, 2007: Being a
member of the Board of World Religious Leaders as part of
The Elijah Interfaith Institute, he participated in the
Third Meeting of the Board of World Religious Leaders in
Amritsar, India, on this day to discuss the topic of Love
and Forgiveness.
- 2007: He received the
Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian award
bestowed by American lawmakers.
- January 06, 2009: He
inaugurated an interfaith "World Religions-Dialogue and
Symphony" conference at Gujarat's Mahuva which was convened
by the Hindu preacher Morari Bapu. This conference explored
"ways and means to deal with the discord among major
religions".
- May 08, 2011: The
University of Minnesota bestowed upon him their highest
award, an Honorary Doctor of Letters.

- 2012: He was awarded the
Templeton Prize. He later donated the entire prize money to

- March 17, 2017: He
inaugurated the three day International Conference on
Relevance of Budhism in 21st Century at Rajgir, Nalanda,
Bihar, India.
- April 02, 2017: He flagged
off the mountaineer Anshu Jamsenpa’s double ascent
expedition from Guwahati in Assam.
- April 04, 2017: The Assam
Rifles felicitated its retired jawan, Naren Chandra Das
(76), who had escorted the Dalai Lama during his escape from
Tibet in 1959. Das is the only surviving jawan among the 8
Assam Rifles men who had escorted the Tibetan spiritual
leader.
- April 06, 2017: The Hindu
organization, Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh (RSS) has demand
a BHARAT RATNA Award for Dalai Lama.
- August 05, 2017: According
to a 1959 document released by Woodrow Wilson International
Centre for Scholars, the Chinese leader Mao Zedong had said
that the Indian PM Jawaharlal Nehru should be "crushed" for
interfering in Tibet.
- August 09, 2017: Reacting
to the ongoing India-China standoff at Doklam, he said that
the spirit of "Hindi Chini Bhai Bhai" is the only way
forward.
- August 13, 2017: While
addressing at the World Peace and Harmony Conclave in Mumbai
he said, "Fear creates irritation, irritation creates anger,
anger creates violence". Yoga guru Baba Ramdev said "had
China believed in peace, Dalai Lama wouldn't have been
here". He further said that if one does not understand the
language of Yoga and peace, must be answered in language of
war.
- August 14, 2017: He said
that India and China cannot defeat each other in war as both
have powerful militaries and suggested India should use its
Buddhist heritage and tourism as a way of bringing the two
nations closer.
- September 11, 2017:
While condemning the violence against
Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, he said Lord Buddha would have
helped the Rohingyas. "Those harassing some Muslims should
remember, Buddha, in such circumstances, would have
definitely helped those poor Muslims," he said. Notably, the
majority population in Myanmar follows Buddhism.
- November 19, 2017: November 19,
2017: He said India and China do not have the ability to
destroy each other. He added that whether the two countries
like it or not, they have to "live side by side". On this
day, China also slammed Botswana over a visit by the Dalai
Lama next month.
