Date-wise Events
May 18, 1974: India
detonated its first nuclear device on this day. This whole operation is known as Operation
Smiling Buddha; a.k.a. Pokhran-I.
May
11, 1998: The Indian Defence Research and
Development Organisation (DRDO) and Atomic Energy Commission
(AEC) conducted three of the five
further nuclear tests, dubbed "Pokhran-II", officially known as 'Operation
Shakti' came 24 years after the first test in May,
1974.
May 13, 1998: Last two of
the total of five nuclear tests, dubbed "Pokhran-II" were
conducted on this day.
May 28, 1998: Pakistan
responded to a series of nuclear tests by India
with five of its own. It is speculated that actually the
devices tested were made by China and all this was done as a
show off of Pakistan's nuclear capability. It prompted the United States, Japan, and other nations
to impose economic sanctions on Pakistan.
Description
Pokhran is a city and a municipality located in the
Jaisalmer district of the Indian state of
Rajasthan.
It is a remote location in the Thar Desert
region and served as the test site for India's
first underground nuclear weapon detonation.
The Pokhran Test Range is a key component of India's
nuclear programme; it is located in the municipality. It was
built sometime before May 1974, when it hosted the
detonation of India's first nuclear device.
The United States and Japan imposed economic
sanctions on India.
India has since declared a moratorium
on testing.
