Thiruvananthapuram (a.k.a. Trivandrum) became a prominent city in
Kerala under his rule.

He is most remembered and revered for crushingly defeating the Dutch
East India Company forces in the Battle of Colachel (Kulachal).

Aug 10, 1741: The Battle of
Colachel (Kulachal) was fought on this day between the
armies of Marthanda Varma and the Dutch. Marthanda Varma won a
decisive victory over the Dutch.

Aug 24, 1741: On this day, all the
Dutch positions fell in a matter of hours and, as a result, . the
Dutch ships were forced to sail away for Cochin (Kochi), leaving
behind huge treasure of their arms and ammunition.

Aug 15, 1753: After Marthanda Varma had
taken full control over the spice producing areas and established
his monopoly over these areas, the Dutch economy started suffering
and , as a consequence, a treaty was concluded between Marthanda
varma and the Dutch East India Company on this day declaring their
intents to live in peace and friendship.

He was succeeded by his nephew, Karthika Thirunal Rama Varma
("Dharma Raja") who ruled for forty years till 1798 and is said to
have followed the style, ethics and principles of Marthanda Varma.
