- July 11, 2011: On this day,
he openly defied the orders of the then Prime Minister, Dr.
Manmohan Singh, who directed him to visit the site of
derailment of the Guwahati-Puri Express in Assam.
- July 12, 2011: As a
consequence of his defiance of the PM's orders, he was
shunted out of the Railways portfolio.
- March 20, 2012: On this
day, he was sworn in as Railway Minister of India.
- September 21, 2012: On this
day, he retired as Railway Minister of India.

- He also serves as the National Vice-President of his
party, the All India Trinamool Congress.
- He was appointed as Railway Minister in place of party
colleague Dinesh Trivedi, who had to quit after his proposal
