It was founded by a young man named Romulus.

According to a legend, Romulus built a wall around his village. When
his brother crossed over the wall, Romulus was so upset that he
killed him. Romulus then said that anyone who ever tried to break
through the walls of Rome, would be killed.

In the year 620 B.C., Rome was conquered by an outside of people
known as the Etruscans, who built Rome into one of the wealthiest
cities in Italy.

Etruscans' rule in Rome lasted till 509 BC.

The wealthy and educated Romans were then known as patricians, who
declared the new form 'Republic' of the next government, where small
group of rulers would be elected by the masses.

During times of emergency, such as during a war, the Romans elected
a dictator, who had complete authority and his word was law.

However, this dictator only served until the crisis was over, after
which their power was returned to the Senate and to the elected
consuls.

This form of republican government survived for the next 500 years
and served Rome well, bringing them greater freedoms and riches.

Romans began to worship the Greek gods, giving them new Roman names.

In a Roman family, the father had the final say in all decisions.

By 200 BC, Rome had become a mighty international power thereby
starting a new era of its existence and development.
