- The duo SJ composed Indian music for the Hindi
film industry, who worked together from 1949–1971.
- This duo wrote everlasting and immortal melodies
in the fifties and sixties.
- Raj Kapoor made his debut as a director with the
film 'Aag' in 1948. The musical compositions in this film
(in which the music director Ram Ganguli was assisted by
Shankar and Jaikishan) proved to be quite popular. During
the recording of some songs for his new film 'Barsaat', Raj
Kapoor had some serious differences with Ram Ganguly, the
music composer of the film and finally he decided to assign
its music to Shankar-Jasikishan Duo. The result was that the
the film Barsaat was a super hit and the success was largely
attributed to itsvery popular music.
- SJ formed a core team with lyricists Shailendra
and Hasrat Jaipuri and with singers Mohammed Rafi and Lata
Mangeshkar.
- Apart from relying upon their knowledge of Indian
classical music, SJ also employed western beats and
orchestration. They had the major contribution towards the
development of Jazz music in India and the new genre Indo
Jazz.
- During their career, S-J won Filmfare Best
Music Director Awards nine times.
- Shankar-Jaikishan Duo was honoured with the
Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1968.
