सन १९५३ में पहली बार मुद्रा नोटों पर हिन्दी भाषा में लिखा गया। रुपया के बहुवचन रुपये पर आम सहमति बनी। ऊंचे मूल्य के १०००, ५००० और १०००० रुपये के नोट १९५४ में छापे गये।
