INDIA - INDEPENDENCE DAY August 15, 1947:   India achieved independence from British rule on this day following the Indian independence movement by way of peaceful nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience under the overall stewardship of Mahatma Gandhi. India obtained its independence as a constitutional monarchy with George VI as head of state and the Earl Mountbatten as governor-general.
