- January 26: Observed as
Republic Day of India - a National Holiday in India.
- August 15, 1947: India
achieved independence from British rule on this day
following the Indian independence movement by way of
peaceful nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience under
the overall stewardship of Mahatma Gandhi. India obtained
its independence as a constitutional monarchy with George VI
as head of state and the Earl Mountbatten as
governor-general.
- August 28, 1947: The
Drafting Committee was appointed to draft a permanent
constitution, with Dr. B. R. Ambedkar as the Chairman.
- November 26, 1949: Final
draft of the Constitution of India was approved by te
Constituent Assembly on this day.
- January 24, 1950: After
many deliberations and some modifications, the 308 members
of the Assembly signed two hand-written copies of the
document (one each in Hindi and English) on this day.
- January 26, 1950: The
Constitution of India came into force on this day. The said
constitution of India replaced the Government of India Act,
1935 as the governing document of India.
- January 26, 2015: For the
first time in the history of independent India, the
President of USA, Mr. Barrack Obama, was the chief guest at
the Republic Day parade in New Delhi, India. The first lady
of USA, Michelle Obama, also graced this occasion.

Description |
- It is one of the three national holidays in India. The
other two are Republic day falling on 26th January and
Gandhi Jayanti on 2nd October, which is the birthday of
Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the Indian Nation.
- The Prime Minister of India, on this day, makes an
address to the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort in
New Delhi.
