Trams |
•A tram (also tramcar) is a rail vehicle which runs on tracks
along public urban streets, and also sometimes on a segregated
right of way. The lines or networks operated by tramcars are
called tramways.
•Trams in India were established in the late-19th century.
Horse-drawn trams were introduced in Kolkata in 1873; electric
trams began in Chennai in 1895, and trams were then introduced
in Mumbai, Nashik, Kanpur, Chalakudy, Patna and Bhavnagar. They
were discontinued in most Indian cities between 1930 and 1970,
except for Kolkata.
- Mar 06, 1908: The trams in Delhi began operation on this
day; the system was, however, closed in 1963 due to urban
congestion.
- Jul 31, 1905: The British Electric Traction Company
received the Bombay electric tramcar service license on this
day.
