December 16, 2012: The
crime involved a rape and fatal assault on this day in Delhi,
when a 23-year-old female physiotherapy intern, Jyoti Singh
Pandey was beaten and gang raped in a private bus in which
she was travelling with a male friend. Both of them were
thrown out of the bus. They were admitted to Delhi's
Safdarjung Hospital the same night.
December 17, 2012: Delhi
Police identified four men who raped and assaulted her --
bus driver Ram Singh, his brother Mukesh, Vinay Sharma and
Pawan Gupta. Doctors said that the woman had suffered grave
internal injuries.
December 21, 2012: One of
the
accused, a juvenile, was nabbed in Delhi. The government
appointed a panel of physicians to ensure she received best
medical care.
December 26, 2012: She was
flown to Singapore's Mount Elizabeth Hospital for advanced
treatment.
December 29, 2012: The
lady victim died in Singapore.
January 3, 2013: Police
filed charge-sheet against five adult accused.
January 17, 2013: Fast
track court started proceedings against five adult accused.
March 11, 2013: Ram Singh,
the bus driver, one of the accused, was found hanging in his cell in Tihar jail
in Delhi.
March 21, 2013: Government
approved new tougher anti-rape law to punish sex crimes.
August 31, 2013: The
Juvenile Justice Board convicted the juvenile for gangrape
and murder and awarded three years term at a probation home.
September 13, 2013: In a landmark
judgment, a special fast track court awarded death sentence
to all four convicted. Trial court referred the case to
Delhi High Court for confirmation of death sentence.
November 11, 2013: The
convicts invoke Mahatma Gandhi to oppose death penalty;
their advocate submitted that death penalty might not stop
such crimes to take place.
March 13, 2014: The Delhi High Court
upheld the death sentences awarded to the four convicts.
March 04, 2015:
A BBC documentary titled India's Daughter based on the
attack was broadcast in the UK on this day.
December 18, 2015: Delhi High Court
refused to stay the release of the juvenile.
December 20, 2015: So the
juvinile walked out of a correction home after spending
three years.
May 05, 2017: Supreme Court
upheld the death penalty of four accused, calling the
gangrape and murder a “devilish” and “barbaric” act.
The incident generated widespread national and
international coverage and was widely condemned, both in
India and abroad.
Subsequently, public protests against the state and
central governments for failing to provide adequate
security for women took place in New Delhi, where
thousands of protesters clashed with security forces.
Similar protests took place in major cities
throughout the country.
