About |
Soon after witnessing thousands of
soldiers dead and as many wounded in the
battlefield and lying unattended, Henry
Dunant took the initiative for
organising from October 26 to 29, 1863,
the international conference in Geneva
to develop possible measures to improve
medical services on the battle field.
The resolutions adopted on 29 October
1863, were:
-Foundation of national relief societies for wounded
soldiers;
-Neutrality and protection for wounded soldiers;
-Utilization of volunteer forces for relief assistance
on the battlefield;
-Organization of additional conferences to enact these
concepts in legally binding
international treaties; and
-Introduction of a common distinctive protection symbol
for medical personnel in the field,
namely a white armlet bearing a red
cross.
Today, ICRC is part of the International
Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement
along with the International Federation
of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies
(IFRC) and 189 National Societies.
ICRC is the oldest and most honoured
organization within the Movement and one
of the most widely recognized
organizations in the world, having won
three Nobel Peace Prizes in 1917, 1944,
and 1963.
The Red Cross day is celebrated on May 8
(birth anniversary of Henry Dunant)
every year for commemorating the role
played by Red Cross in saving the lives
and in providing significant relief to
human distress and misery across the
world.
The Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) is a
voluntary humanitarian organization to
protect human life and health based in
India. Formed on March 20, 1920, IRCS is
part of the International Red Cross and
Red Crescent Movement, and so shares the
Fundamental Principles of the
International Red Cross and Red Crescent
Movement.
